Pharmacist

The purpose of the Pharmacist position is to provide comprehensive dispensing and clinical pharmaceutical services to the clinic and pharmacy patients and to other professional staff as well as overseeing pharmacy technicians and other subordinates in performing technical and clerical functions.

Essential Functions
  • Review prescription orders for accuracy and completeness.
  • Fills labels and dispenses prescriptions according to One Community Health policies, State and Federal laws.
  • Assures accuracy and completeness of billing.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory of medications and supplies.
  • Dispenses controlled substances according to approved policy.
  • Orients and trains new pharmacy personnel, including residents and students.
  • Routinely assesses patient's understanding of drug therapy and provides consultation when indicated.
  • Must consistently demonstrate a high level of patient specific involvement and direct inter-professional interactions.
  • Researches and provides drug information to medical staff, clinical personnel, and patients.
  • Monitor selected patient's drug therapy as appropriate to ensure protocol compliance and minimize drug toxicity.
  • Attends staff meetings at One Community Health. Maintains and expands professional expertise.
  • Oversees pharmacy technicians. Documents clinical activities and interventions.
  • Acts as liaison between clinic administration, medical staff, nursing, and pharmacy staff level.
  • Participates in the quality control system of the pharmacy.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skill levels in area of expertise to ensure provision of the highest quality patient care services.
  • Provide explanations (within scope of practice) to patients about treatment, using terminology and phrasing which is responsive to and appropriate for patient's age, language skills, and emotional state.
  • Anticipate patients' needs and, within scope of practice and authority, take initiative to meet those needs; keep patients informed about actions to be taken.
  • Handle telephone calls and in-person contacts in a friendly, courteous, and sensitive manner.
  • Problem-solving with customers
  • Promptly and courteously provide the information and services requested by patients.
  • Provide consistent and timely follow-through ensuring that all patient requests are addressed in a way which minimizes inconvenience to all parties.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire.
  • Current California Board of Pharmacy license in good standing.
  • Two or more years' recent experience in retail pharmacy.
  • AphA - Certified Immunizer
  • Knowledge of current pharmacy terminology, brand and generic names, abbreviations, and drugs on current hospital formulary.
  • Must be able to interpret and understand physicians' orders, and pharmacy and nursing records.
  • Proven analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of 340B Program
  • Knowledge and understanding of current California Pharmacy Law and other Federal Regulation (e.g., DEA) effecting the practice of pharmacy.
  • Proficiency with pharmacy management software system/s
  • Knowledge of current Medi-Cal Formulary and other third-party billing systems. Complete working knowledge of, and skill to apply, practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area to of expertise.
  • Written and oral communication skills to clearly, and concisely provide information, explanations, and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English.
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines, and when interacting with challenging customers who may be ill, angry, or emotionally distressed.
  • Obtain and maintain BLS Certification

Preferred Background
  • Current knowledge of HIV/AIDS drugs and treatment regimens
  • Experience working in a community health center.
  • Knowledge of specialty medication distribution.
