We are currently looking for a Government Affairs Specialist to join us in our mission to save lives and prevent injuries.

Position Highlights:

Part of a dynamic team that supports and leads NSC government affairs initiatives at the federal and state level to end preventable deaths in our lifetime. Serves as government affairs lead on designated NSC priorities. Provides representation at meetings with legislators and their staff, government officials, partner organizations, and others. Works with NSC research and subject matter expert staff to research safety issues for policy and advocacy materials. Researches and drafts NSC policy position statements on relevant safety issues. Cooperates with communications staff to identify policy issues to support through communications. Supports and manages partnership efforts with federal agencies and like-minded safety organizations.

What You'll Do:

Engagement, Outreach, and Grassroots Advocacy - 60%
  • Lead NSC government affairs efforts in assigned areas, including the promotion of authorizing legislation that supports NSC priorities. Build relationships with Congressional staff, Executive Branch staff, partners, and coalitions to further the NSC agenda to eliminate preventable death in our lifetime.
  • Represent NSC at meetings with Congressional staff, Executive Branch staff, coalitions, and other entities.
  • Support state advocacy activities, including outreach to state legislators in support of NSC priority, supported legislation. Coordinate state legislative advocacy efforts with like-minded safety organizations.
  • Identify opportunities and support strategies to activate NSC constituencies in educating policymakers.
  • Engage NSC volunteers, compile member input, and draft NSC responses to select federal agencies' requests for input, including NPRMs.
  • Support and manage projects and activities taken on by the Council as part of work with federal agencies in assigned areas.
  • Represent NSC at meetings, as necessary.
  • Contributes to monthly government affairs newsletter.
  • Support and manage projects and activities taken on by the Council as part of Alliances with federal agencies

Research & Communications - 20%
  • Track the introduction and movement of federal and state legislation for assigned areas. Recommend legislation that the Council should consider endorsing.
  • Track legislative history and legislators' past votes and positions on key NSC safety issues.
  • Research and draft official NSC policy position statements on pertinent safety topics in coordination with appropriate NSC staff.
  • Review regulatory agendas and Federal Register to identify safety-related rulemakings which align with NSC, NSC membership, or partner priorities. Draft appropriate responses.
  • Track budget proposals and Congressional appropriations bills for federal agencies and programs of importance to the Council.

Partnerships - 10%
  • Engage with Federal Agencies for opportunities to utilize NSC expertise public-private partnerships.

Administration - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned

Other Job Duties - 5%
  • Responsible for safety as outlined in the Safety Manual. Follows safety policies and practices specific to job/position and level.

We're Looking for Someone with:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant area with a minimum of 2 years' experience in public advocacy initiatives in safety or similar governance policy experience.

DECISION MAKING:
  • Represent NSC at meetings on Capitol Hill, with government agencies, with NSC members and chapters, and with safety advocacy and information-sharing groups. Discretion and judgment to produce written communications for federal and state legislative audiences.

ISSUE KNOWLEDGE:
  • Experience in government affairs, preferably with transportation, workplace safety, prescription drug, or public health. Extensive knowledge of issues surrounding NSC issue areas at the federal and state levels, including legislative climate and key organizational players.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR ASSETS:
  • Responsible for project-related equipment, storage access, access to NSC's DC offices, etc.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Internally: Transportation Initiatives, Workplace Initiatives, Prescription Drug Initiatives, advocacy and communications staff, research staff, executive team, and senior management, etc.
  • Externally: Members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives and their legislative staff, Congressional committee staff, state legislators and their staff, federal agency staff, contracted lobbyists, NSC advocacy partners, company-owned and independent chapters nationwide, NSC members, etc.
  • This is a hybrid position
  • Salary Range: $60,000 to $75,000
