The Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoptions, community spay/neuter services, and humane education programs.

HSTT’s Thrift Shop is a nonprofit thrift boutique offering quality second-hand and vintage items to benefit animals being cared for and supported by HSTT. The shop will have a curated selection of gently used and vintage clothing, pet-related goods, household goods, small home décor, artwork, jewelry, and low-cost brand new items.


Summary: The Thrift Shop Manager is responsible for all facets of the retail store’s operations, including, but not limited to, the daily operation of HSTT’s retail area, including personnel (staff and volunteer) management, budgetary controls, inventory controls, etc., while maintaining the highest level of customer service and facilitating a safe and healthy working and shopping environment for all.


Essential Duties/Responsibilities: This job description reflects the assignment of essential functions; it does not proscribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the HSTT Thrift Store. Must balance the workload between managerial duties and assisting customers on the sales floor and provide a pleasant and welcoming environment for all.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and support all HSTT Thrift Shop staff and volunteers. Must be willing to cover shifts when needed.
  • Represent the HSTT brand by maintaining the highest level of customer service.
  • Responsible for the proper accounting and banking of cash receipts at the end of the business day. Safeguard cash at all times.
  • Provide daily, weekly, and monthly statistics sales reports, as requested, to the CEO and ensure compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for the overall productivity results in the store.
  • Maintain online sales platform, including choosing items appropriate for online resale, writing item descriptions, photo upload, order fulfillment, and shipping
  • Develop business strategies and strategic relationships to expand store traffic and optimize profitability.
  • Work with the Manager and CEO to develop the thrift store’s annual budget and maintain budget monitoring and controls for a profitable operation.
  • With management, develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures, a Thrift Store Volunteer Handbook, a Cashier’s Manual, and Emergency and Safety Procedures.
  • Enforce pricing policies (one price/no haggle) and recommended strategies for sales promotions to maximize sales.
  • Establish a system for purging items from the shop to ensure a constant flow of new inventory.
  • Create an attractive shopping environment, including neatly stacking, shelving, and hanging clothing, garments, and other donated goods.
  • Ensure the shop is always organized and clean, which includes sweeping, vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting shelves, cleaning bathrooms, washing windows, etc.
  • Resolve all issues that arise from customers or volunteers (conflicts, complaints, etc.).
  • Responsible for scheduling of volunteers to ensure each day is staffed with an appropriate number of volunteer associates and that the shop is opened, closed, and secured per scheduled operating hours.
  • Identify ongoing training needs and continuously evaluate the needs of volunteers correcting any deficiencies. Ensure all volunteers are trained in their duties and have clear expectations.
  • Provide ongoing appreciation to volunteers to express gratitude, keep engagement high, and reduce turnover.
  • Conduct regular meetings with thrift store volunteers to discuss training, policies and procedures, and safety.
  • Analyze market trends, traffic patterns and identify customer needs.
  • Order and pick up supplies required to operate the Thrift Store (cleaning, cash register supplies, etc.).
  • Work with the marketing team to promote the shop and the items for sale.
  • Understand and comply with federal and state laws regarding the sale of used items, including IRS tax regulations.
  • Ensure that all thrift store operations follow all Federal, State, and local safety regulations and laws and HSTT policies and procedures and ensure a safe environment for all customers, staff, and volunteers.
  • Responsible for the protection of property and building. Report safety hazards, property damage, and personal injuries to the Manager and CEO immediately and work collaboratively to resolve issues.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies at all hours, even when not working.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum education includes a high school diploma or GED equivalent. A college degree in Business, Sales, Marketing, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in retail sales management and merchandising with a track record of success. Thrift shop experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to use a cash register and teach others how to use one, which includes void transactions, discounts, tax-exempt sales, etc.
  • Excellent math/accounting skills and familiarity working with cash receipts. Computer fluency in MS Office, Excel, or other donor database software, web applications, and social media, and knowledge about the role of technology and electronic payment systems.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations, animal welfare, and volunteerism.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills; capable of working effectively with customers, volunteers, staff, vendors, and the general public.
  • Energetic, self‐motivated, professional, flexible, and adaptable with a sense of humor, able to multi‐task and work independently in a hands-on work environment.
  • A team player with an attitude of service and the ability to motivate others.
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license with a driving record acceptable by our insurance carrier and be bondable.
  • Highly motivated toward the welfare and humane treatment of all animals; ability to work with and handle animals safely and humanely; understands the lifesaving importance of finding homes for shelter animals.

 

Physical Demands: This work is performed in an office, shelter, and/or retail surrounding; requires workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; bend; reach; hold, grasp, and turn objects; and use fingers to operate computer keyboards. The work requires the ability to speak clearly and communicate.


COMPENSATION: $28-$30 per hour DOE plus benefits, including Health insurance, 401(k), FSA, PTO, basic veterinary care for personal pets, snacks, and more.

POSITION: Full-time, non-exempt. Weekend work is required. The application period closes on April 23, 2024.
